Healing Meals Invites Community to Open House at Auerfarm on 9/11

Tour Kitchen and Gardens, Taste Food, Learn About Healthy Food & Wellness, Go On A Fun Run, More

Healing Meals Community Project, Connecticut’s only non-profit that delivers organic, healthy meals free of charge to individuals in a health crisis will hold an open house at its new location at Auerfarm, 158 Auer Farm Road in Bloomfield, on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, from 4:30-7:00 p.m.

“Our new space at Auerfarm is beyond our wildest dreams; from the animals, to the kitchen to our nourishing organic garden, it is a magical place,” says Healing Meals executive director Sarah Leathers. “We can’t wait to celebrate with everyone who attends the open house and to share more about the wonderful work we do to advocate for those in a health crisis through food as medicine.”

Visitors to the open house will be able to:

  • See where vegetables are transformed into Healing Meals in the wonderful new kitchen;
  • Taste some delicious treats made by Chef Donna and the talented Youth Chefs;
  • Smell the herbal abundance in the beautiful Healing Meals organic garden;
  • Hear the musical sounds of the lovely goldfinches flying around the farm;
  • Learn about healthy food and wellness at the Nutritional Nugget education station;
  • Feel creative while decorating a tile for the Healing Meals inspirational wall of healing; and
  • Enjoy the breeze as Healing Meals kicks off its Because We Can 5K team training for the upcoming Eversource Hartford Marathon – Fun Run begins at 6:00 p.m.

Healing Meals Community Project has a dual mission to provide healing and support for families who are facing a health crisis while empowering youth volunteers with leadership and character-building opportunities.

When Sarah Leathers and her team of volunteers launched Healing Meals in the fall of 2015, they knew two things – one, the community greatly needed healing and support for families struggling with cancer, auto-immune disease and other life-changing health issues; and two, they had the knowledge, skills and inspiration to make a difference. With a goal to serve 4,600 meals to families in need during its first year, Healing Meals began cooking at New England Pasta Company in March 2016. Healing Meals leaders estimated that if they could achieve their first year’s goal, they would aim for 7,800 meals the second year.

To date, Healing Meals has provided more than 21,000 meals for over 175 clients and their families in 42 towns throughout the greater Hartford area. More than 200 youth volunteers and more than 200 adult volunteers have worked together to shop, prepare and deliver meals, fundraise, care for clients, and so much more.

About Healing Meals Community Project

Founded in 2015 by Sarah Leathers and Ellen Palmer, Healing Meals Community Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves 100 percent organic meals free to families in the greater Hartford area who are going through a health crisis. Youth volunteers over the age of 14 not only prepare the meals – they develop leadership, job, and work-ready lifetime skills while learning about healthy eating, the power of food choices and the importance of supporting their community. Healing Meals Community Project was inspired by the Ceres Community Project, based in California. Learn more at www.HealingMealsProject.org.
